Surfrider Pacific Rim is honoured to have been a part of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation Days – a week long celebration of family, culture, and community events throughout the TFN Traditional Territory. Youth Coordinator Jason Sam organized the Surfrider component of TFN’s beach activities under the Youth Environmental Stewardship Program on August 9th. This program carries the belief that young people are the future guardians of the environment. Of course, with TFN days being centred around community and culture, the YES Program was a perfect fit for the games day at the beach. Todays YES event began with introductions on why we love the beach, followed by the game Herbivores, Omnivores, Carnivores – SURFRIDER EDITION! The lessons from this game catapulted us into the clean up, getting us stoked to collect debris from this beautiful territory. All the participants learned about microplastics, and how plastics impact the health of the food chain, which comes back to negatively impact our own lives. Through a lot of team work, the group was able to collect 48 kg off of the beach, making it even more beautiful for the rest of the day’s activities! We thank TFN for having us, and are looking forward to developing a stronger partnership!
This clean found so many microplastics that there were too many to count! We estimated about 4Lbs. Definitley our most significant find.
