Surfrider Pacific Rim is working with 16 diverse businesses in Tofino and Ucluelet to help them transform their current operations to eliminate single use plastics, implement progressive recycling practices, and increase sustainable initiatives in businesses operations. Through this campaign, resources, innovative ideas and practices are gained from each business and shared with all participants, as well as the entire business community in the Pacific Rim. The OFB Campaign is a pilot project funded by the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, and adheres to the values laid out in the CBT’S Vital Signs Report
This campaign is a celebration of the great practices businesses already have in place, and the positive changes they make to meet the criteria of the campaign. The OFB Campaign will be completed by Earth Day, April 22nd, 2018. For their success, these businesses will receive marketing materials for their stores, menus, and websites, which recognizes their status as a Surfrider Approved Ocean Friendly Business.
Additional Goals Include:
- Creating a platform for businesses to share sustainable resources and progressive recycling outlets.
Facilitating a waste management study, with the goal of gaining information that can be used in the efforts to streamline waste management across the Pacific Rim.
- Increase effectiveness of every Surfrider Pacific Rim campaign and program, as they are encompassed in the OFB criteria.
- Community events that feature the Ocean Friendly Business Campaign through the Tofino Chamber of Commerce and participating businesses.
- BYO mug day in October, working to eliminate single use coffee cups for an entire day in the Pacific Rim and increase use of reusable mug.
