On February 9th and March 19th 2018, Surfrider Pacific Rim screened Plastic China, an award winning documentary that addresses equity, waste, and the state of the environment. This film shows the direct impact excessive plastic waste has on the protagonist Yi Jie and her family; we are reminded that, while we may not see it, our own actions can have a direct impact on people living thousands of kilometres away. This screening is presented under Surfrider’s Rise Above Plastics Program, which raises awareness on the impacts of plastic pollution and how we can all make a difference in our lives by saying NO to single use plastics.
The event was joined by guest speaker Jill Doucette “Plastics are a critical topic- because the recycling industry is rapidly changing (developing countries don’t want our low grade wastes) and that’s a powerful signal that we need to change our consumption habits and supply chain.”
The film follows a beach clean up event at Combers beach 1-4pm. Shuttle will be provided, aswell as treats! Learn how to test for microplastics with the Ucluelet Aquarium as we pull out the microplastic sieves and get busy hunting!
We thank LYBC sponsor Jamie’s Whaling Station as well as the Tofino Hostel for partnering on the first Plastic China event, and the Clayoquot Theatre and the Pacific Rim Whale Festival for partnering on the second event!
